Performance artist June Segal, known professionally as Jushi, was born in Harlem, New York. She has studied a wide range of dance styles and techniques with such teachers as Eleo Pomare, Alvin Ailey, Katherine Dunham, Alwin Nicolai, Talley Beatty, Fred Benjamin, Lynn Simonson, Thelma Hill, Henry LeTang, Larl Beechman, Diane MacIntyre, JoJo Smith, Charles Moore, Syllvia Fort, Pearl Reynolds, and Pepsi Bethel. Her studies in theater improvisation include work with David Sheppard, co-founder of Second City.

Jushi has performed her dynamic, inimitable work at a wide range of New York venues including the Public Theater, La Mama ETC, the Cornelia Street Cafe, and the Nuyorican Poets' Cafe. Hailed by Josh Meander of Nomad's Choir as "the most dramatic and insightful performer on the New York poetry and performance scene", Jushi's exhuberant presence and unique fusion of poetry and dance have won her a loyal local following and captivated audiences nationally and internationally. She has performed and taught throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan, and has choreographed Broadway and off-Broadway productions. She is the founder and artistic director of Sundance Workshop theater/dance performing arts company, which was one of the first recipients of the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs grants.

Jushi, also an accomplished musician and self-taught bassist, has performed at Barry Harris's Jazz Cultural Theater, University of the Streets, Baruch Workshop with Milt Hinton, and Sun Ra's Arkestra. She composed and conducted the M.O.B.I. Jazz Orchestra's production of Endgame, and her musical appearances have ranged from various radio programs and clubs.

A former member of the faculty of the CUNY Manhattan Community College, Jushi teaches dance to children and adults in New York City. Her outreach and teaching activities have included such projects as "Chair Dance", a movement program for the elderly and physically disabled individuals confined to wheelchairs; an Artists In The Schools residency which combined music, movement, theater, and English and Japanese language; and an introductory course in English and Japanese for businessmen which utilized theater improvisation techniques.
