  • NFL Draft 2024 grades: Seahawks earn outstanding marks for Byron Murphy II pick

Analysts seem to agree — Murphy is poised to make an impact

The NFL Draft is here, and that means arbitrary grades are soon to follow! Sure enough, with day one in the books, analysts around the league are sounding off on how they feel about yesterday’s first round picks. Despite the shocking run on quarterbacks that saw six passers off the board before the middle of the round, the Seahawks stood pat and selected the best player available in Byron Murphy II. Unsurprisingly, this selection has earned rave reviews from pundits around the league.

Noted draft expert Dane Brugler of The Athletic gave the Hawks a solid ‘A,’ describing Murphy as a disruptive force inside.

Murphy doesn’t have ideal length, but his rare combination of lower-body twitch, natural leverage and power throughout his frame sets his apart. With his disruptive energy, both as a pass rusher and versus the run, he projects as an impact starter who can play shaded nose or three-technique, similar to Grady Jarrett.

    Grade: A

Nick Baumgartner shared similar sentiments, as he also gave the pick an outstanding mark.

Good things come to those who wait? Sure, we’ll go with that. The Seahawks have had a need right in the middle of their defense for what seems like several years now. And after an early run on quarterbacks and tackles pushed the top defenders down, Seattle hits a whopper by landing the top interior defensive lineman in this draft at No. 16.

Murphy, who can play nose or three-technique, is extremely powerful and explosive with a lethal punch at the point of attack. A smaller body in the Aaron Donald mold, Murphy is all gas off the line of scrimmage and his natural leverage makes him a bear to deal with inside. Some teams valued Murphy as a top 10 player in this draft. This is terrific value for new coach Mike Macdonald. Grade: A

Chad Reuter of NFL.com joined the chorus, giving the Seahawks yet another ‘A.’

Analysis:One of the least surprising picks in the first round was Murphy to the Seahawks. His skills as a run-stuffer and interior pressure machine were worthy of a pick in the top half of the first round and something Seattle needed in its front four. His 6-foot-1/2-inch, 297-pound frame belies how well he plays under the pads of offensive linemen, and his quick first step makes him tough to handle one-on-one, especially on reach blocks. Similarly-sized tackles like Ed Oliver and Calijah Kancey show you don’t have to be huge to be a top-notch lineman.

Pete Prisco joined in as well with his own stellar grade.

    Grade: A

They patiently wait and get the player who might be the best defensive player in this draft. Murphy has been compared to Justin Madubuike, who new Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald coached in Baltimore.

Pro Football Focus put the pick in their “good” category, which is clearly... good. Only eleven teams graded as “very good,” or “elite.”

    Pick Grade: Good

The Seahawks opt to improve a position where they already have some pieces in place with one of the best defensive players in the draft. Since 2021, Murphy’s 12.5% pressure rate ranks third among defensive tackles with at least 500 pass-rushing snaps, trailing only 2023 first-round picks Jalen Carter and Calijah Kancey. A Murphy and Leonard Williams tandem on the interior creates a clear strength for Seattle heading into 2024.

Matt Verderame of Sports Illustrated was also positive, even if he wasn’t blown away by the pick.

By most accounts, Murphy is the best defensive tackle in this class. He dominated in the Big 12 over the past two seasons, totaling six sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss.

More importantly, his traits jump off the tape. He’s 297 pounds, has incredible power off the line and is able to hold his own against double teams while also penetrating on pass plays. It’ll be interesting to see how Murphy approaches potentially adding some weight at the next level as well.

    Grade: B+

USA Today shared a similar sentiment, with Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz giving them a ‘B+’ and comparing Murphy to Justin Madubuike.

The Mike Macdonald era is officially underway in the Pacific Northwest. The former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator lands his version of Justin Madubuike, the defensive tackle who broke out in 2023 with 13 sacks. The Seahawks have tied up a lot of resources in their defensive front after re-signing Leonard Williams and bringing aboard Dre’Mont Jones last offseason, but Murphy is massively disruptive and is poised to be a foundational piece for Macdonald moving forward.

Rob Rang of Fox Sports was possibly the least impressed of the takes I could find, which is saying something because he was still quite positive on the pick.

Rang:Voted the Big 12’s Defensive Lineman of the Year in his first season as a starter, Murphy’s game screams untapped potential. His explosive quickness, agility and natural leverage advantage make him impossible to block one-on-one. The issue I have with this selection for Seattle is the scheme fit, as the Seahawks are expected to feature more of a three-man front boasting defensive tackles with longer arms and whose game is all physicality. Murphy’s addition does make the Seahawks’ defense more dangerous and versatile, though.

    Grade: B

The second day of the NFL Draft is about to get underway, so stay tuned for more grades and analysis as the Seahawks continue to make picks!

  • Why the Falcons drafting Michael Penix Jr. isn’t as crazy as it may seem

The former Husky’s selection raised a lot of eyebrows, but Atlanta’s move was hardly unexpected.

The Atlanta Falcons’ selection of University of Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the 8th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft caught a lot of people by surprise, including Mel Kiper Jr. and the rest of the talking heads on the official draft broadcast.

Kiper’s exact words when the pick was announced were, “Too high for my liking.”

Yet, within a few hours, reports emerged that three other teams, including the Seattle Seahawks, had tried to get into the top 10 to select Atlanta’s newest QB.

Personally, I wish Seattle had tried harder.

As y’all might remember, I had predicted that Penix was Seattle’s target at No. 16 and, admittedly, I would have loved to see him in a Seahawks uniform for the next decade or so.

Alas, ‘twas not meant to be . . .

Because he was selected by the Falcons at No. 8.

And although that surprised Kiper & Co., if there were at least four teams interested in taking him at that point in the draft, then maybe, just maybe, Atlanta isn’t as crazy as the internet seems to think.

Sure, the Falcons just signed Kirk Cousin to a 4-year, $180M contract. And, yeah, $90M of that was fully guaranteed the moment he signed the contract.

    But . . .

There is a scenario where Atlanta could walk away from Kirk Cousins for the low, low price of $50M, and - - - wait for it - - - in that particular scenario, the Falcons would actually save money against their cap this season and next season.

    Crazy, right?

And yet, the math bears it out.

Here are the relevant numbers for Cousins’ contract (per OTC):

    • 2024: $12.5M base salary, $12.5M prorated signing bonus, $25M cap hit
    • 2025: $27.5M base, $12.5M prorated bonus, $40M cap hit
    • 2026: $35M base, $12.5M prorated bonus, $10M roster bonus, $57.5M cap hit
    • 2027: Same as 2026

If, for whatever reason, the Falcons were to move on from Cousins before he played a single (regular season) snap for them, and did so via a trade, the numbers would look like this:

    Atlanta Falcons:

    • 2024:$12.5M prorated signing bonus, $12.5M cap hit
    • 2025: $37.5M prorated signing bonus, $37.5M cap hit

Note: In this scenario, the Falcons would “save” $12.5M against their cap in 2024 and $2.5M in 2025.

    Acquiring Team:

    • 2024: $12.5M base salary, $12.5M cap hit
    • 2025: $27.5M base, $27.5M cap hit
    • 2026:TBD

Note: Cousins’ $10M roster bonus in 2026 was guaranteed against injury at signing and becomes fully guaranteed on the 5th day of the 2025 league year. There is no other guaranteed money on his contract though, which means the acquiring team could walk away after two years OR pay him $45M per season for another year or two (which might seem like a bargain by then).

Obviously, in this hypothetical scenario, Michael Penix Jr. would need to earn the Week 1 starting role as a rookie, Atlanta would need to find a trade partner (after June 1st), and the Falcons would have to be willing to “eat” $50M in dead money . . .

    But crazier things have happened.

For example, a 3rd-round quarterback beat out a high(ish)-priced free agent quarterback (and an incumbent starter) in Seattle 12 years ago.

Even crazier, the Denver Broncos are eating $85M in dead money on the 5-year, $245M extension that Russell Wilson signed when Seattle traded him two years ago . . . even though he never played a single snap on that extension. (Ouch!)

Bottom line: The Falcons’ decision to draft a rookie QB at No. 8 six weeks after signing an expensive free agent QB was unusual, but it wasn’t crazy. And there’s a chance, depending on how the next few months play out, that we might end up viewing their move as brilliant...

Even if they end up paying Kirk Cousins $50M to never actually play for them.

    Go Penix!

  • NFL Draft 2024: Cooper DeJean, Johnny Newton top list of best available for Day 2

The Seahawks are not scheduled to pick again until late on Day 2, but a lot of talent remains available with the second round set to start Friday.

Months of planning, mocking and predicting finally came to a conclusion with Day 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft putting 32 new players on new teams. The Seattle Seahawks added beef on the interior of the defensive line selecting Byron Murphy out of Texas with the No. 16 pick, but the team still has significant needs to address over the final two days of the draft.

The Hawks hold six additional selections Friday and Saturday, however, they are scheduled to make just a single selection on Day 3. That pick is No. 81 in the third round, meaning that barring a move to add a pick before then, they’ll watch another 48 players come off the board before getting to add another name.

That, of course, means that many of the top names remaining will have been selected long before the Seahawks comes back on the clock in the third round, but there’s always a chance that one or two of the top players could drop. Whether or not that happens won’t be known until well into Friday evening, meaning in the meantime it will be left to fans to hope that the players they want to see slip to Seattle don’t have their name called.

The best remaining players available as teams prepare for Day 2 of the draft depends on where one looks, so here is a sampling of the best available from a variety of different sources.

So, it seems no matter where one looks many of the players considered the best available as Day 2 opens are similar across various outlets and resources:

    • DT Johnny Newton
    • CB Cooper DeJean
    • C Jackson Powers-Johnson
    • CB Kool-Aid McKinstry
    • WR Troy Franklin

It seems doubtful that the Seahawks will be lucky enough to see one of these top names drop all the way to No. 81, but stranger things have happened and being a fan is all about rooting for the unlikely to begin with.

  • NFL Draft: Stars align for both Mike Macdonald and John Schneider
    Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY Sports

The chips fell differently than predicted, and at No. 16 overall the pick for the Seahawks is exactly someone their new coach should love.

The 2024 NFL draft promised to be very exciting and the first round has absolutely not disappointed.

With the first 14 players to come off the board from the offensive side before Laiatu Latu’s selection by the Indianapolis Colts led to the Seattle Seahawks having their choice of any other defensive player from this class. Troy Fautanu was also available, the most mocked player to Seattle for over a month.

The choice was interior stud Byron Murphy II from Texas, which accomplishes two things.

1)Gives the Seahawks a truly formidable defensive line, from side to side.

    2) Postpones any hoped-for answer as to how the head coach influences John Schneider’s draft decision-making.

Because this pick is best of both worlds, nabbing someone that was legitimately in the conversation as one of the best three defensive players in the draft and best available. He’s also exactly who Mike Macdonald was looking for.

We’ll have to wait for our answer, but I’m stoked that this lined up so well. I didn’t want the Seahawks to trade back, but I also didn’t want them to take defense. However, that was under the assumption that Jared Verse and Byron Murphy were both gone.

This draft has been full of surprises, and Murphy is an incredibly pleasant surprise.

It gives Seattle something it hasn’t had since Michael Bennett was in town; two legitimate sources of pressure right up the middle. Two and a half depending on where they play Dre’Mont Jones.

All of this is while actually rostering two quality outside rushers at the same time in Moye Mafe and Uchenna Nwosu. That’s also something the team has struggled to obtain since the departure of Frank Clark.

The Mike Macdonald regime is off to a very on-brand start. It will be impossible to know based on this pick alone to what level Schneider aims to get coach’s preference, but undoubtedly this defensive tackle fits Macdonald’s scheme.

Coach was very candid about this element of his defensive philosophy this week:

But in general, we are trying to build a wall up the middle. Trying to stay square, trying to set hard edges, make the ball do that (go outside), make them throw the thing outside. You don’t want to get gashed up the middle of your defense, you’ve got to have the right guys who can play right there so you can get the job done.’

It’s as up the middle as it gets, and the benefit of Murphy is he’s so good as a three-down player it allows Macdonald to leave other positional rotations on the table. Leonard Williams is particularly moveable, while both Jones and sophomore Mike Morris have some movability as well.

Murphy tested extremely well at the combine, and this is a huge win for a unit that has just not lived up to potential for long enough. Macdonald hopes to end that drought.

  • Childhood Seahawks fan Byron Murphy II has his ‘dream come true’
    Ricardo B. Brazziell/American-Statesman / USA TODAY NETWORK

The former Texas Longhorn is the first Seahawks draft pick under new head coach Mike Macdonald.

For the second straight season and fourth time in the last six, the Seattle Seahawks used their top pick of the NFL Draft on a defensive player. Texas defensive tackle Byron Murphy II was one of only nine defenders taken in Round 1, and he’s the latest addition to the Seahawks’ retooled interior front.

Speaking with media on Thursday night from his Texas home, Murphy provided a description of what he brings to Seattle’s defense.

“I’m just very aggressive, a very dominant player,” Murphy said. “I can stop the run, rush the passer, I’m an all-three-down type of D-lineman. That’s why I feel like I fit perfect in their scheme and their defense.”

Murphy also says the Seahawks view him as a 3-tech defensive lineman (placed opposite the outside shoulder of the guard).

The 21-year-old Murphy also revealed that he was a Seahawks fan growing up—he wasn’t even a teenager yet when Seattle won the Super Bowl—and now he’s going to be playing for the team he loved to watch.

“I really loved the Legion of Boom, Earl Thomas, Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, Michael Bennett, all those guys, just how dominant they were,” Murphy said. “And you had the offensive guys, Russell Wilson, Marshawn (Lynch), Doug Baldwin, (Jermaine) Kearse. Just watching them growing up, they dominated the league, they won a Super Bowl, so growing up watching them do that, man, that’s all I ever wanted is to win the Super Bowl.

“It means a lot (being picked by Seattle), it’s an honor for them to believe in me and invest in me. I’m going to give them everything I’ve got. I owe them my everything. Growing up that was my favorite team, so to be drafted by Seattle, it’s crazy. I give all glory to God, I feel like it’s just God’s plan.”

I’m sure the Seahawks organization and the fans can’t wait to see Murphy live out his dream on the field and wreak havoc in the backfield.

  • 2024 NFL Draft, Round 1 recap: Seahawks take ‘best defensive player in the draft’
    Ricardo B. Brazziell/American-Statesman / USA TODAY NETWORK

Byron Murphy II is headed for Seattle.

Round 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft is in the books, and the Seattle Seahawks did stay at No. 16 (despite some efforts to do otherwise, apparently) and make a pick. In the words of Seahawks general manager John Schneider, Seattle got themselves the best defensive player in the draft.

Texas defensive tackle Byron Murphy II was a standout player in college and had a fantastic NFL combine to put him in position to be a high draft pick. Murphy was Big XII Defensive Lineman of the Year in 2023 and provides the Seahawks with some much-needed two-way interior help as a disruptive pass rusher and strong run defender.

Of course, by not trading down (or trading at all), Seahawks fans will likely have to sit tight until the team is on the clock again. Seattle’s next pick is in the third round, having given up its second-rounder to the New York Giants in the Leonard Williams trade. If you’re so minded, the Seahawks have spent their top two draft picks for 2024 on the interior d-line.

The story of the day across the NFL was the offense-heavy nature of Round 1. An astonishing 14 straight offensive players were taken before UCLA edge rusher Laiatu Latu went off the board to the Indianapolis Colts at No. 15. A whopping 23 offensive players (including six quarterbacks in the top 12) were taken on Thursday, an all-time record. That means we should see a run on the remaining top defensive names on Friday.

Sources to view an NFL live stream

The NFL is different from other major sports leagues in that most of its games are televised not on cable channels but on free over-the-air networks like Fox, CBS, and NBC, although some of these arrangements could be updated from time to time. That said, it could still take some effort to search for good deals offering an NFL live stream suited to a particular budget and might entail using a mobile app over a streaming broadcast for a wide screen television set. While it could prove challenging to find an NFL live stream portal for completely free viewing during an entire season, including playoffs, here are some options that might suit certain needs.
