Mortal Kombat 12 Wasn't At State of Play, But Was Just Announced
During an earnings call, no less.
Well, this is amusing. NetherRealm Studios has been historically coy about the nature of its next project, although it’s been rumoured to be Mortal Kombat 12 for quite some time. Well, that game was just announced – during a Warner Bros Discovery earnings call. Don’t believe us? Well, check out the clip embedded below:
“There’s lots more to come,” the presenter reads. “Including the highly anticipated Mortal Kombat 12 and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. games are also set for release this year with ambitious launch projections.”

NetherRealm's Ed Boon Teases Next Game Launches in 2023
And we'll learn more fairly soon.
Ed Boon, the face of NetherRealm Studios, likes to leave hints every now and again. The developer is known for making Mortal Kombat and the DC fighting series, Injustice, and fans have been eagerly anticipating whatever NetherRealm comes up with next. Last month, Boon said the studio's next title will be either Mortal Kombat 12 or Injustice 3, though which one is still a mystery.
Now, after answering some questions on Twitter, we know a couple more details. Firstly, Boon teases more than once, that NetherRealm's next game will arrive in 2023:

Midway Legend Ed Boon Isn't Giving Much Away About NetherRealm's Next Move
It'll be Injustice or Mortal Kombat.
The next game from NetherRealm Studios will be Injustice 3 or Mortal Kombat 12, according to a typically tongue-in-cheek creative director Ed Boon. Of course, while there were some brief (and presumably unfounded) rumours regarding the possibility of some kind of Marvel game – despite the developer being under Warner Bros’ umbrella – these two have always seemed like the likeliest candidates.
NetherRealm Studios had been pretty predictable up until recently, as it alternated between Mortal Kombat and Injustice on two year cycles. However, its last game, Mortal Kombat 11, came out in 2019, so it’s clearly taking its time here. We wouldn’t be surprised to see some kind of announcement at The Game Awards next month, especially now that the Mortal Kombat series’ 30th anniversary celebrations are more or less in the rear-view mirror.

Ed Boon: We Haven't Made the Last Mortal Kombat Yet
Series will continue to evolve and innovate.
Mortal Kombattt! The series celebrates its 30th anniversary today – but creator Ed Boon has confirmed we haven’t seen the last of the iconic fighting franchise. Speaking in a wide-ranging interview with the PS Blog, the industry icon admitted there’s more to come from the series, as it hasn’t “made the last one yet”. However, he clarified: “I guess that’s probably the closest I can say without revealing too much.”
While there have been a number of rumours regarding developer NetherRealm Studios’ next project, speculation seems to have settled on another Mortal Kombat being in development. And while Boon wouldn’t be drawn on specifics, when asked about the future of the franchise, he said: “Mortal Kombat will continue to feel fresh, to feel new, and to push boundaries with regards to certain aspects of game design.”

Mortal Kombat Celebrates 30 Years of Fatalities with Mind Blowing Montage
Get over here and watch it.
Mortal Kombat is celebrating 30 years of brutality, and while fans had been hoping for a new game announcement – or, perhaps, a compilation of old ones – this montage trailer will have to suffice. To be fair, it’s impressive: it segues between classic retro footage of the old arcade Mortal Kombat games and modern ones, and even layers in scenes from the various films and animated shows.
Obviously, things can get a bit gnarly – it wouldn’t be Mortal Kombat if they didn’t, would it? – but this is well worth a watch if you can stomach the impalements and severed body parts before dinner. What are your fondest memories of Midway’s legendary beat-‘em-up? Finish them in the comments section below.

Mortal Kombat's 30th Anniversary Bundle for PS5 Gets Over Here
Raiden the wave.
Mortal Kombat is a treasured franchise among fighting game fans, and is celebrating its 30th anniversary at the beginning of October. Many had hoped that developer NetherRealm Games would commemorate the occasion as loudly as one of Johnny Cage’s jackets, and while that may still turn out to be true – well, the firm’s 30th Anniversary Ultimate Bundle isn’t going to be earning the firm many Friendships.
Available to pre-order on Amazon UK – but technically not yet officially announced – the package includes a copy of Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate for PS5 and last year’s maligned movie in 4K Ultra HD. To be fair, it does only cost £29.99, which is likely to work out at around $34.99 in the United States. Moreover, it includes a pretty tasty Amazon Exclusive steelbook case, which looks really nice.

Mortal Kombat News Ruled Out for Sony's Evo 2022 Event
Fatality.
It's a good time to be a fighting game fan. Whether you're enjoying the casual brawling of the popular MultiVersus or are gearing up for next year's Street Fighter 6, there's plenty to be excited about. Evo 2022 is also just around the corner, and Sony — which now owns the annual tournament — will be hosting live events that will include announcements from some major publishers. However, one fighting franchise in particular will be giving all that a miss.
The Evo Lounge event will feature many publishers including Bandai Namco, Capcom, and Warner Bros. Games. Some fans expected the latter to mean we might finally get to see what's next for Mortal Kombat. Unfortunately, series co-creator Ed Boon has shut down that theory:

Mortal Kombat 12 Seemingly Confirmed in Staged Social Media Snap
It's a setup.
An obviously staged social media photo uploaded – and swiftly deleted – by NetherRealm Studios’ senior production manager Jonathan Andersen has seemingly confirmed Mortal Kombat 12, although it’s possible the developer may just be playing with its fans. The image, which focuses primarily on some artwork, includes the corner of a computer monitor, where ‘MK12_Mast’ is one of the files.
There’s also the bottom of an email on the screen, where Andersen points out “our fans eagerly scrape the Internet” to a colleague. So this is clearly a setup, designed to either raise interest in the sequel or simply troll. There had been some speculation that NetherRealm Studios was working on a Marvel game at one point, but it’s since become clearer that another Mortal Kombat is more likely.

Review: Mortal Kombat X (PS4) - Get Over Here and Play This Skull-Cracking Fighter
Blood is thicker than water.
Republished on Wednesday 29th September 2021: We're bringing this review back from the archives following the announcement of October's PlayStation Plus lineup. The original text follows.
Mortal Kombat X knows what it takes to keep you engaged. Cast your mind back to the early 90s, and series creator Ed Boon's garish pretender was the grubby chip shop time waster, while Capcom's vastly superior Street Fighter II gobbled up competitive coins in nearby carpeted arcades. There's always been a gulf in class between the two series: Midway's former brand made its name through violence and vulgarity, while Ryu and crew showed a bit of restraint and class. But the PlayStation 3's excellent Mortal Kombat reboot proved that the franchise was capable of more than just tabloid headlines: it stripped back years of fighting game fiction, focused the roster, and fashioned a fighting system that toed the line between accessible and deep. This latest PlayStation 4 foray from NetherRealm Studios very much follows in its predecessor's wake – and just like its forebear, it's no flash in the pan.

Mortal Kombat 11 DLC Ceases As NetherRealm Turns Attention to Next Project
Hardly an Injustice.
After two years of frankly fantastic support, NetherRealm Studios has confirmed that it’s moving on to pastures new, and ceasing DLC support for Mortal Kombat 11. The fighter’s had an exceptional run, with multiple character additions – including Rambo and the Joker – as well as an entirely new story add-on. The title will continue to be played competitively, of course, but its developer will be focusing on its next project.
Exactly what that will entail is still unknown. NetherRealm Studios has, historically, bounced between Mortal Kombat and its DC fighting franchise Injustice, but there are rumours that the Warner Bros-owned outfit may be making a Marvel brawler next. While that may seem wild, it’s worth remembering that TT Games – another WB Games subsidiary – has worked on various Marvel and Star Wars titles, albeit LEGO-themed adaptations.
