Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Mortal Kombat 1?
Prepare for kombat.
Mortal Kombat 1 has been out for roughly a week now, and so we're wondering what you lot think of NetherRealm's latest effort. An undeniable looker boasting what many consider to be the most enjoyable gameplay that the series has seen in years, the especially gory fighting game seems to have been a hit with most fans — at least on a fundamental level. Indeed, we've heard some complaints about online components, and that the single-player offering is a bit lacking. But overall, a solid soft reboot (that totally isn't a soft reboot).
We gave the title a respectable 7/10 in our Mortal Kombat 1 PS5 review. "Like we said in the beginning, Mortal Kombat 1 is the best and most refreshing entry in the series since Mortal Kombat (2011), but it falls directly into the same traps as those prior entries," we concluded.

Poll: Are You Playing Mortal Kombat 1?
Prepare for kombat.
You may not have realised thanks to a brief period of early access, but today marks the full release of Mortal Kombat 1. The latest instalment in NetherRealm's eternally popular fighting game series, it's got typically impressive visuals, punchy gameplay, and a twisted interest in watching entrails leave the human body in especially gruesome fashion. It's Mortal Kombat, alright!
We gave it a 'good' 7/10 in our Mortal Kombat 1 PS5 review, claiming that the core game's great fun, but the surrounding package is a bit hit and miss. "Mortal Kombat 1 is the best and most refreshing entry in the series since Mortal Kombat (2011), but it falls directly into the same traps as those prior entries," we concluded.

Review: Mortal Kombat 1 (PS5) - Good But Not a Flawless Victory
Baraka in the habit.
Mortal Kombat 1 represents a new era for the fighting game series. However, it also marks the first time in a while that a new Mortal Kombat title has been released where worthy competitors have been present. Games like Guilty Gear Strive and Street Fighter 6 have raised the bar for fighting games significantly since Mortal Kombat 11 released, and it’s on Mortal Kombat 1 to keep up.
Lets get it out the way first, this is the best Mortal Kombat game since Mortal Kombat (2011). Mortal Kombat X took things too far with the three character styles and bringing back Mortal Kombat 3’s terrible run system. Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat 11 went too far in the other direction by making a slower game where zoners like Jacqui ruled online, while still locking moves behind different sets of gear.

Site News: Where's Our Mortal Kombat 1 PS5 Review?
It's koming.
Mortal Kombat 1 releases today for those who’ve podded out on the game’s Premium Edition, so you may have been expecting us to publish our PS5 review. Unfortunately, we’ve only just received access to the game, and that means our verdict is going to be a little late. Obviously, we’re eager to thoroughly test out all the features, including the cinematic story mode and new Invasions, so it’s going to take us a little bit of time to work through everything.

Mortal Kombat 1's PS5 Launch Trailer Is Going to Sell a Lot of Copies
Shut up and take our money.
Well, that just about seals it: Mortal Kombat 1 looks absolutely incredible. This launch trailer has a bit of everything: slick cinematics, gorgeous gameplay, and even a couple of glimpses of the new Super Smash Bros-esque Invasion mode – this is going to be one for the ages, we reckon. We also get some first footage of pre-order bonus character Shang Tsung and roster padder Reiko.

Mortal Kombat 1's PS5 Trophies Won't Take Long to Finish Them
At least, not on first glance.
The full list of Mortal Kombat 1 Trophies has hit Sony’s servers ahead of the brawler’s release later this month – and it won’t take long to finish them! Well, that’s assuming there aren’t any nasty secrets lingering in what appears to be a relatively straightforward list. You’ll earn gongs for a variety of straightforward tasks, like completing the training mode and spilling 5,000 pints of blood.
Additional trinkets are rewarded for performing Fatalities with Kameo characters, completing five Klassic Towers with different brawlers, and reaching Level 20 in Invasions mode. On paper, this all looks really quite easy, so unless there’s something we’re overlooking or missing, we reckon the Platinum should have quite a high attainment rate.

This Is How Jean-Claude Van Damme Looks in Mortal Kombat 1
Bloodsport.
Here he is, then – Jean-Claude Van Damme as Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 1. Despite the Belgian actor famously playing Guile in the live action Street Fighter movie, Cage has always been inspired by the Hollywood star, and he’ll finally feature as the character in the reboot’s Premium Edition, which includes access to the first Kombat Pack.

Retailer breaks street date on brawler.
Mortal Kombat 1’s full character roster has leaked approximately two weeks before release, with an errant Nintendo Switch cartridge somehow finding its way into a fan’s hands. While we won’t disclose the complete list of characters here – Warner Bros is already copyright striking any mirrors that are popping up around social media – you can find a list of officially confirmed Mortal Kombat 1 fighters so far through the link, which we’ll be updating through until launch.

Mortal Kombat 1's Kameos Could Lead to Some Crazy PS5 Crossovers
Guest characters being lined up post-launch.
There’s a strong chance Mortal Kombat 1’s pretty cool Kameos system could lead to some crazy crossovers in the future. For those of you who haven’t been following the fighter, the system allows you to tag in a teammate to help during combat, with the allies also aiding during Fatalities and some devastating special moves.
And while a bunch of Kameos have already been confirmed as part of All Mortal Kombat 1 Characters, the potential for even more additions is enormous. According to some marketing materials coming out of Brazil, developer NetherRealm Studios is eager to build on the number of Kameos available post-release – and is even allegedly lining up some guest characters.

$10 for a character is fair, $10 for a skin is insanity.
submitted by /u/Jiggsteruno to r/MortalKombat [link] [comments]
For context, the MK1 combat pack is $40 USD for 6 characters. Assuming each one is sold individually for $10, you save about 33% with the bundle; making each character worth about $6.60. Seems typical pricing of FG DLC.
A single cosmetic skin, however, costs $10; roughly 15% of the $70 base games total worth.
MK11 sold its unique skins in packs of 3 for $6, so $2 a skin from a $60 base game price is 3.3%
That's roughly a
12%500% increase in the price of a single skin from their last game.Thank you to those who corrected my math
That's a ludicrous jump in price, especially with how barren the games launch content is. On top of the price gouging, these MK1 skins are sold on FOMO practices to further push the upcharge to the consumer with nostalgia bait.
Please have some self-respect and don't support this predatory bullshit.

As a long time fan of the series, I've never felt more disrespected by a product as I have with MK1
submitted by /u/1234ideclareworldwar to r/MortalKombat [link] [comments]
And it sucks. Because I really wanted the like this game. The roster is amazing, the visuals are amazing, some of the characters like Mileena, Shang, Raiden and Reptile feel the best they ever have gameplay wise. This was both symbolically and narratively a fresh start to the series and they have fumbled the ball so hard with the this release and its left an extremely poor taste in my mouth.
MK1 is a blatantly unfinished and unpolished game. They're is a noticeable lack of content compared to MK11, particularly in regards to customization. Simple accessibility features like being able to choose your characters skin on the fighter select screen and the ability to pin moves in the training mode are gone. One has to question where all this apparent dev time went, because it certainly wasn't getting Megan Fox to deliver her lines in a remotely convincing manner.
They're is a litany of bugs and glitches, but by far the most egregious oversight is Player 1 advantage, which manifests in an even more gamebreaking way than it did in MK9. I'm sure some casual players won't see this as a big deal but the fact this made it into the main game and out of QT is frankly insulting to competitive players who have been advocating for MK to be taken seriously as a fighting game for years. It truly is a spit in the face of the people who keep the game alive playing online after all the casuals drop the game after a few matches with a guest character. Seeing this sub explode in cheers when Boon announced a patch would fix this issue (which has now been delayed cause the developers seem to be blatantly incompetent) is frankly infuriating, there is not excuse for an oversight like this being in the game at all.
The game does succeed in creating an engaging combat system, not doubt about that, but the online experience itself is pretty bad. The loading times to find a match are egregious and you can’t filter out people using wifi or shitty connections, meaning you’re forced to engage in laggy games. Then there’s the fact you can’t make a lobby, a staple feature of the industry.
Finally the approach to paid content is garbage. One of the lead developers of the game said in an interview there was 24 characters at launch, we got 23. No one at NRS ever thought to correct this blatantly false statement? No lets just wait for players to figure out were full of shit themselves after the game launches to prevent bad publicity. Pure scumbag behaviour. You cannot tell me with a straight face the roster was suppose to be 23, Quan Chi and Ermac were on the original roster leak, they are prominent characters in the story. They were moved to DLC because MK1 was rushed to release to recoup some money WB lost on their capeshit flops because MK11 was massively successful and showed the fanbase was loyal and willing to put up with bad game design. People pointing out that they reuse assets like that somehow disproves they were suppose to be base roster, give me a break. Shang Tsung is the main villain of the game and locked behind a $10 paywall if you didn't pre-order, they even give him his own story chapter. Oh, and if you're offline or not connected to the servers, it looks like you can't use the character you paid for. What happens when the servers are shut off permanently then? We can never use the DLC we paid for again? I'm actually shocked this is considered remotely acceptable by anyone.
And of course, $10 dollar skins with unclear communication whether or not they come back or are available in game. We paid 70-110 dollars for the full game which is notably barebones in customization as is and now they're charging 10 bucks for a single FOMO skin like this is a shitty mobile game. NRS is aware that games they use these models are free to play, right? And to think this is what they fix before Player 1 advantage. The greed, disrespect and contempt for the playerbase is disheartening, as is the fact shills and paypigs will continue to defend and enable these garbage business practices that are killing the gaming industry. And honestly, if you are okay paying 10 bucks for a skin every week, you're a paypig and should reconsider your life choices. Yes, you, the consumer, are part of the problem and the reason games like MK1 are going to keep getting released.
As a longtime Mortal Kombat fan, this was the franchises chance at a fresh start and regain some of the goodwill lost with MK11, but instead we get a rushed, unfinished, barebones, broken, microtransaction infested hunk of garbage. And it stings, because their is the foundation of a good game here, and we're unlikely to ever get such a good roster again. Its honestly becoming embarrassing to be a fan of this series, and everyone involved in the production of this game should be embarrassed too.

I'd only drop $10 for Cyber Smoke as a Premium Shop Skin if he has unique Intro dialogues, taunts, black blood/innards and a Klassic Win pose. If NRS is going to make us drop $10 for a skin, they need to really make it worth every dollar
