In Atari Centipede you need to stop the advance of the centipede as it slithers its way down the screen simulating a mushroom forest. The player controls a gun (bug-blaster) that can only move in the bottom fifth of the screen. The object is to shoot a centipede that crawls its way down to the player’s area through the field of mushrooms.
A player must fight off centipedes, spiders, scorpions, and fleas using the bug-blaster patrolling at the bottom of the screen. The object of the game is to destroy as many enemies as possible. During every level, you must destroy all the segments of a centipede. The bug-blaster will fire small darts at the centipede. The centipede consists of 10 to 12 body parts, including the head. Each piece continues independently on its way down toward the bug-blaster.
The centipede, which is made of several segments, will change direction when struck. Each segment of the centipede breaks off when shot and the segment turns into another crawler and moves independently of one another. Shoot the head of the centipede to destroy it completely. The gameplay becomes quite frantic as you try to zap the multiple centipedes wriggling to the bottom of the screen. Allowing the centipede to reach you concludes a sequence.
